The VE 80 Day celebrations kicked off in the morning with the raising of the unique VE 80 Day flag and the Proclamation. The Mayor, Cllr Pamela Davidson, read the proclamation at 9am, in line with many other towns and cities throughout the country.
The Mayor then planted the 80th poppy in front of the British Legion club.
Tea and cupcakes are were served in the TIC between 10am and 1pm, and it was great atmosphere! Many residents and visitors were having a go at the special jigsaw which we hoped would be completed by the end of the day.
The Royal Deeside Bagpiper played at the Moot Hall from 12 noon and he opened with a song that was written specially for VE 80 Day. There was children from Bolton Nursery and Appleby Primary School, who also joined us in the TIC afterwards for some juice and a cupcake, and a go at the jigsaw.
There was lots of fun at Castle Bank! Proceedings were being supervised by Winston Churchill himself, and your hosts – Captain Mainwaring and Private Pike – did a fantastic job! The table and front room is decked out in red, white and blue, and Private Pike did not stop baking all week!
Appleby Methodist Church had people queuing out of the door for their amazing VE 80 Day Afternoon Tea. The set up was fantastic and the ladies homemade cakes and sandwiches were delicious.
After the Church Service and bell ringing at 6pm, the final event of the day was the lighting of the VE 80 Day Beacon on Fair Hill at 9.30pm, which was well supported and was the perfect end to a day of celebration.
